3/11/21: What a difference a year makes!!

Many, mostly difficult, lessons later - almost to the day - we’re reopening our doors once again. Things are gonna still look different for a while - masks on, tables apart, no over the bar banter - but we’ve come so far and SURVIVED, so we’re not gonna let the little things trip us up. We’ll be operating with limited hours and just indoors for a bit, but as we get our sea legs back we’ll be extending time and space. Mainly we really, really, REALLY look forward to serving you up some good old Gowanus hospitality. Thanks for sticking by us. We’ll see you soon.

5/1/2020: ZOOM ZOOM aka how time flies …

I can’t believe it’s been 6 weeks since we had to put a sheet over the gilded birdcage of our bar. The days go so quickly, yet the pace of them still feels uncomfortably idle. As someone who thrives in organized chaos, who lives for the shifting energy and dynamics of the bar world, the monotony of my bubble has me listless but unmotivated. Except for Zoom. Bar life has us chatting and socializing and communicating and in touch with the world just through the daily actions of our vocation and home was always a place of quiet respite. I’ve never really been a phone person, and friends and family will tell you of the frustration of trying to facetime me! Apparently all it took was some imposed isolation to cure me of that!! We know it’s not the same as actually meeting with friends at Dirty Precious, but we made you some virtual backgrounds so at the very least we can pretend!

Click and download to raise a glass to our future reunion!! We don’t know when it will be or what it will look like, but we’re very much looking forward to it.

And a huge thank you to everyone who has sent messages, brought gift cards and/or donated to the staff fund. Your support means so much and we can’t wait to tell you so in person.

3/17/2020: It all started when…

Today marks the 4 year anniversary of us very gently opening the doors of the beautiful space called Dirty Precious. It is not lost on me that the flutters I felt in my gut then, are not dissimilar to the quivers I feel in my heart now. Yet that is where the similarities end. In 2016, I hoped that what I envisioned this community wanted in a public space would act as a guideline for the future, but what we’ve actually created in the years in between far surpasses any of those lofty goals. I secretly hoped that I was capable of creating an accessible, inclusive, community reflective space and it drives me batshit crazy that I would have been celebrating this creation, this community, the hard work of our staff and the actuation of these dreams if not but for the advancement of this catastrophic pandemic.

Bar and Restaurant folks are social creatures. The Dirty Precious team is no exception. We’re good at our jobs and create amazing spaces because we know how to be there for people. We’ve been here for your celebrations, your commiserations, your leaps and crashes. We’ve raised glasses to your success, and poured stronger drinks (and extra water) for when things are hard. We’ve watched you fall in love, make tough choices, make dumb choices, come out the other side and cheered (and cheersed) you on the whole time. We’ve helped you raise awareness for your causes, donated to your schools, and opened up our space for your meet ups and fundraisers. There are many definitions of, and adages about, hospitality, but my personal drive comes from who we get to be for people. We get to have an impact on someone's day just by being there. And that’s pretty special. Not to mention all the delicious food and drink!!

In times of crisis all we want to do is show up and help, with doors and arms wide open. But this is not the time for that. This is the time to stay home, and keep ourselves and others safe … and we are willingly adhering to these new rules. However when the doors are closed, when no glasses can be clinked together, when no stories can be told, it also means that no money is coming in.

So here’s the call to action … the staff needs help to ride this out. Below is a link to a crowdfunding page where you can donate. There’s also a button that will help you buy a gift certificate if you prefer to support that way. And you can also sign up for our mailing list, because we want to stay in touch and share any Dirty Precious news.

Thank you for all the support and we look forward to seeing you soon.

Much Love,

Pai
